INIHANDOG ang ika-16 na Lasallian Scholarum Awards (LSA) ng Pamantasang De La Salle (DLSU) na may temang Adapt-ed: Youth and Education in the Time of Pandemic, Marso 26. Pinarangalan sa LSA ang mga propesyonal at estudyanteng mamamahayag para sa kanilang mga natatanging kuwento ukol sa kabataan at edukasyon sa kabila ng pandemya.
Kabilang sa Board of Judges para sa taong ito sina dating Senador Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino; Marcia Gokongwei, Co-managing Director ng Universal Robina; Natalie Christine Jorge, Chief of Party ng Youth Leadership for Democracy – Asia Foundation; Dr. Clodualdo Del Mundo Jr., DLSU Faculty Member at Vice President ng Screenwriters Guild of the Philippines; at JB Tan, co-founder ng iVolunteer Philippines at The Good Store.
Pagpapahalaga sa pamamahayag
Ipinabatid ni Br. Raymundo Suplido, presidente ng DLSU, na ito ang kaunaunahang pagsasagawa ng programa sa online na plataporma bunsod ng COVID-19. Sa kabila nito, patuloy na kinikilala ng Pamantasan ang gampanin ng midya sa pagpapaunlad ng isang indibidwal at ng lipunan. Aniya, “Genuine journalism brings us stories that shake our ground, advocacies that sting our conscience, realities that stir us awake at night or even in our sleep.”
Binigyang-diin din ni Suplido na nakapokus ang tema ngayong taon sa mga kuwentong nagpapaigting sa paniniwala sa bawat isa, pagbibigay-serbisyo, at pagmamalasakit sa kapwa. Pahayag niya, “This year, we highlight the resilience, innovation, and determination of Filipinos amidst the uncertainties brought about by COVID-19.”
Ayon pa sa kaniya, isa rin itong paraan para mabigyang-pugay ang mga indibidwal at pangkat na malaki ang kontribusyon sa paghubog sa kabataan at pagsulong sa edukasyong para sa lahat. “DLSU honors these outstanding individuals, organizations and media partners. As we all continue to strive for truth and excellence,” sambit niya.
Pagtugon sa hamon ng new normal
Sa kabilang banda, ipinaliwanag naman ni Raphael Reyes, pangunahing tagapagsalita ng programa at co-founder ng project WIFI, ang kanilang layunin sa likod ng pagsasagawa ng nasabing proyekto. Aniya, “Project WIFI, an initiative and as well as a SEC-registered foundation, is formed by a group of law students. . . where we seek to address the gap by sponsoring pocket wifi to students who do not have access to the internet.”
Ipinabatid din ni Reyes na binigyang-linaw ng pandemya ang mga pagsubok ng sangkatauhan, tulad ng kawalan ng pagkakapantay-pantay sa lipunan, pati ang mga hakbang na kailangang isagawa upang matugunan ito. Dahil dito, ipinunto niya ang kahalagahan ng edukasyon sa panahon ng krisis. “We have been reminded that education is a bulwark against inequality and. . . in enabling lives of dignity and purpose.”
Kaugnay nito, hinikayat din ni Reyes na gamitin ang pagkakataong ito upang baguhin ang mundo. Paghihimok pa niya, “Now is the time for public deliberation and democratic accountability. Now is the time for intelligent collective action.”
Samantala, ipinarating din ni Reyes ang tunay na diwa ng mga award program tulad ng Lasallian Scholarum Awards. Saad niya, “The program aims to generate awareness on the critical needs and concerns and the encouragement of proactive initiatives towards the development of the country as a whole and the educational system, as well.”
Bago magsimula ang pagbibigay ng mga parangal, itinampok din sa programa ang disenyo ni Toym Leon Imao, kilalang visual artist sa Pilipinas at propesor ng University of the Philippines – College of Fine Arts, para sa iskulturang tropeong matatanggap ng mga nagwaging propesyonal na mamamahayag.
Ayon kay Imao, isinasabuhay ng disenyo ng tropeo ang kalidad ng mga ipinababatid na mensahe ng institusyon. Paliwanag niya, “The box in itself is the representation of the senses we have. . . The airplanes take on several hues of the school colors and they are meant to represent the flight of ideas coming out from an institution.”
Pagkilala sa kahusayan at serbisyo
Mula sa hanay ng mga estudyanteng mamamahayag, pinarangalan bilang Outstanding Published Feature Story on Youth and Education in a school organization ang artikulong “Spectrum of experiences: Children with special needs face up to distance learning demands” nina Kay Estepa, Glenielle Geraldo Nanglihan, at Criscela Ysabelle Racelis ng The LaSallian.
Itinanghal naman bilang Outstanding Online Feature Story on Youth and Education ang artikulo ni Bonz Magsambol ng Rappler na “No student left behind? During pandemic, education ‘only for those who can afford.”
Binigyang-gantimpala naman si Noel Pabalate ng Manila Bulletin para sa artikulong “Private school teachers share their experiences in blended learning” na itinanghal bilang Outstanding Published Feature Article on Youth and Education in a nationally circulated publication.
Itinampok din ang The Atom Araullo Specials – Batch 2020 ng GMA bilang Outstanding Video Feature Story on Youth and Education.
Ipinagkaloob naman kay Rhia Grana ng ABS-CBN ang Outstanding Published Feature Story on De La Salle University para sa kaniyang artikulong “DLSU engineers just presented possible approach in distributing COVID antiviral.”
Para sa pangwakas na pananalita, inilahad ni Br. Bernard Oca FSC, Chancellor ng DLSU, ang kahalagahan ng mga mamamahayag sa paghahatid ng mga kuwento lalo sa panahon ng pandemya. Aniya, “As storytellers, you give voice to the disenfranchised, shed light in the face of uncertainty, and elevate discourse beyond the partisan or tribal.”
Paglalahad niya, “The work of shaping the future, of helping build our nation through education is a communal mission. . . We share the dream of a sustainable future, a society with democracy, and a life with dignity.” Dagdag pa niya, hangad ng DLSU na patuloy na masaksihan ang paghubog sa mga kuwento ng pangarap sa pamamagitan ng Lasallian Scholarum Awards.
“As we help shape our story in the most challenging time, we need not just courage, integrity, and faith. But, also each other,” pagtatapos niya.
